Camel at Giza - Animals, paintings by Rain Longson

Camel at Giza

Hmm. The story behind my camel painting...

Well it goes this way, you see I have a friend who went to a wedding in Egypt. Of course being the intrepid traveller that he is, he played tourist. He showed me photographs of all the places he visited. Temples, gardens, fancy hotels... And lest we forget the pyramids at Giza and rode camels too. Lucky guy, I wish I could do that too!

I fell in love with the photo of the camel - just loved the brightly colored harness with its kooky pompoms! I ask for and recieved permission to borrow this photograph of the camel and that of the pyramids.

This was also around the time that I was beginning to get annoyed with people alwas mistaking my paintings for photographs or posters - even when they were holding the canvas in their hands and touching it feeling the paint on it.

So this one I decided NOT to finish it all the way to the edge. So there you can see all the brush strokes. I start with a larger paint brush all over, a lot of glaze and work my way to the detail in what I consider to be the focal point of the painting. Using magnifying glass and jewellers magnifying loop
