Hi, Rain here, the crazy critter lady
Hello, Rain here.
I would like to tell you a bit about myself.
Growing up I discovered two major passions, my pets and my ability to express myself through art:
The first art instruction I remember was not to eat my crayons, so you can see that my interest started at a very young age. In my young mind, my reasoning at the time was, “anything with such pretty colours had to taste good too”.
As a typical young person, my ideas about my future changed from day to day. At one time, I planned on becoming a veterinarian or an astronaut! To my disappointment, I was told, “No, girls can’t be vets!”. Lost, my plans dashed. I floundered along until I met an incredible woman, Mrs Sandra Tobe, an art teacher at my high school.
Mrs Tobe reintroduced me to art. From that point on, I never looked back. I had found my true love and vocation. As a teenager, I illustrated college student’s assignments, taught art at the local community centres, and had my artwork displayed in several shows and galleries. Upon graduating from high school, I received two scholarships, one to Parson’s School of Design in New York City and the other to the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.
Over the next few years, I was like a sponge, absorbing all that I could in every area of arts from sculpture to graphic and fashion design.; working with Sassoon in Florida; to window dressing in N.Y.C.
After moving to Vancouver, I spent a year at the Vancouver Film School, covering everything from digital graphics, illustration, animation videography and audio.
Throughout all this time, I kept coming back to my first love.
I had come full circle and returned to painting acrylic, watercolour, and drawing in both graphite and coloured pencil. I was delighted to discover that I had a knack for pet portraiture. I love the detail that is needed to make the animal come to life, to see the life in their eyes, their smiles and the wet, tender noses.
Now I get to combine my love for animals and nature with my passion for painting.
I now reside full time in Delta BC with my wonderful husband John and our two fur kids.
I am currently available for painting commissions and graphic design work. Have a look at my gallery and feel free to get in touch and discuss a project or a commission.
